‘Wombling’ campaigners are keen to pick up volunteers

GUERNSEY’S beaches may start to look a little cleaner now volunteers have pledged to clean them up by ‘wombling’.

Over the weekend, staff from the law firm Ogier in conjunction with Pick It Up Guernsey organised themselves into teams and went out to womble in force, covering beaches near their respective homes. Between them they covered every beach in Guernsey over the course of the weekend. (20561929)

Pick It Up Guernsey, in conjunction with law firm Ogier, will look to make wombling a mainstay of Guernsey life as they bid to clear the island’s beaches of litter and debris.

Charlotte Brown, and Andrew Munro, the two organisers of the clean-up, said it was an encouraging sign that the island’s beaches were generally clean by international standards.

‘The teams have still collected a lot of rubbish which would otherwise remain in the marine environment, unsightly and dangerous to our beautiful ecosystems.

‘It shows that, as a community, we must remain vigilant – litter does come in from the sea and in strong winter weather conditions can blow out of bins and cars and end up on our streets and beaches.

‘We would encourage people to think carefully about litter which may escape from boots and car doors in windy conditions and secure it.’

Pick It Up Guernsey is looking to further its goal of universal wombling by signing up 52 businesses, organisations, clubs, or other groups to take on a Wombling Week so that there is a rolling programme of constant wombling on the island.
