The 23-year-old, who is named Howie and is from the Gerlings, was taken to hospital by ambulance but has now been discharged. He has not broken any bones.

The fall was on the opening night of the circus and happened in front of a sell out audience.

'Thankfully, he is ok and has not broken any bones as it was thought he had,' said Binky Beaumount, of the production.

'He is now back at the hotel resting.'

Mr Beaumont said Howie was most concerned about his costume and how the others members of the act were.

'He has vowed to be back on the wheel tomorrow night, as the saying goes "the show must go on’".

Mr Beaumont said this morning the ticket office hotline had been shut down by the number of people calling for information and there was a queue outside the ticket office with people asking for news.

'Howie will be back in the show tomorrow if doctors allow at the 4.45pm performance.'
