Mrs Morgan, then Wendy Wolstenholme, was originally a member of the Alderney States and represented the northern isle in the Guernsey Assembly before moving to Guernsey in 1993 where she married Conseiller Laurie Morgan in 1995.
She was a non-States member of the then Education Department before she was elected to the States in 2004, after which she went on to become the committee’s vice-president.
Mrs Morgan was one of the first people elected after new electoral districts were introduced, winning a seat in St Peter Port North.
She lost her seat at the 2008 election and she and Mr Morgan retired from politics.
Among the current members of the House who was a member at the same time as Mrs Morgan is Deputy Peter Roffey, who said she was a good friend.
‘I am both shocked and saddened by her untimely death, even though I knew she was ill,’ he said.
He said that her interest in education went back to her time in the UK, when she was head teacher of a large and successful comprehensive school – the same school where the popular children’s TV series Grange Hill was filmed.
‘Wendy was always keen to point out that the real-life school was rather better run than its fictional counterpart,’ said Deputy Roffey.
She campaigned tirelessly against the 11-plus in Guernsey and was convinced that a non-selective system would suit all children.
He paid tribute to her passion and tenacity in pursuing issues she felt strongly about: ‘She really cared deeply and was completely indefatigable over issues where she was convinced she was right.
‘In recent years, Wendy had been pretty much a full-time carer for Laurie and it is very sad that she ended up surviving him for such a short period of time,’ he said.
Guernsey’s longest-serving States member, Mary Lowe, said that it was a pleasure to work with Mrs Morgan: ‘She was a great asset to the States and very knowledgeable about Alderney and Guernsey affairs,’ she said.
‘When she contributed in debates she made you listen to what she had to say.’
