‘MOT’ tests for vehicles is coming, confirms E&I

A Guernsey version of ‘MOT’ testing for vehicles is coming, the Environment & Infrastructure Committee has confirmed.

Committee president Adrian Gabriel admitted that there had been several false starts with the project, but he said it was now firmly back on track.

‘It’s not coming in during 2026, and if we want to start it on 1 January then it won’t be 2027 either, but it could be if we started it mid year.’

Deputy Gabriel said Guernsey had no choice but to bring in the ‘periodic technical inspection’ of local vehicles because it was required under the Vienna Convention. But he said his committee was going for the lightest touch possible.

‘Just to allay any fears that motorists might have, the inspection regime is going to be once every three years once your car gets to five years old.

‘So it’s not going to be an annual inspection.’

E&I said it now has a member of staff working on the scheme, creating technical documents, and consulting with both industry and the States’ legal team, in advance of bringing the new regime into operation.
