‘There is no way of knowing for sure what started the fire, but we suspect it to have been a discarded cigarette butt or a spark from one,’ Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service crew commander Adrian Savident said.

It took firefighters around two minutes to put out the flames which were reaching about 15ft high.

‘I want people to be aware of what could happen when discarding cigarettes, it’s important to be careful,’ he said.

The incident occurred around 4.15pm yesterday and police closed Routes Des Cornus, St Martin’s.

Matt Dobson, assistant manager at the Wicked Wolf pub, said the fire service was very professional.

‘The Fire and Rescue Service was very quick and luckily the fire was outside so did not affect any of the interior.

‘The truck was on site within four minutes of us making the call,’ he said.

Nobody was injured, but smoke blackened an outside wall of the Wicked Wolf and caused some damage to the bushes on the other side.

The road re-opened at 4.59pm.
