Thanks to the help of the charity’s new assistant managers, Jessica Aughton and Stuart Smale, they have been making use of their workshop, creating bird boxes, bug hotels, wreaths and table decorations.

On Saturday, Grow will be holding its own Christmas Fayre at its Petits Quartiers Vinery base in the Coutanchez from 10am to 3pm.

There will be lots going on, including Christmas card making, arts and crafts, Christmas stocking gifts, face painting, cakes and mince pies, bottle stall and tombola.

Also there will be the chance to meet Father Christmas at noon and there will be wreath-making classes with Tiger Lily Florist at a cost of £30.

However, limited spaces means booking is required in advance.

On Sunday, the Grow team will be at Styx Centre for the Christmas market between 1pm and 4pm.

‘We have been making all of our wreaths from scratch throughout the week.

‘The crew start with a wire base and then they add the moss before more greenery like holly and then some ribbon too.

‘Everything is sourced on site and, if it can’t be, then it is locally sourced or recycled,’ said Ms Aughton.

The wreaths take about half an hour to construct once materials have been collected and the crew have put together 20 so far, ready for the weekend with lots more planned.

‘We are also making table decorations, these will be sold for £5 each and the wreaths for £10.

‘We are trying to get people to come here and see this as the place for them to come to pick up their produce and plants which are of a high quality.

‘I have been trying to make sure we have what is available at the moment on display in the front shop to draw people in as they are passing,’ added Ms Aughton.

As well as Christmas-themed creations, the crew at Grow have been turning their hand to woodwork. Mr Smale said: ‘We have utilised the workshop this year, which the crew have been very happy about. In there they have been given the opportunity to build birdboxes and bug hotels.

‘We would like to get about 50 of each and we have two designs for the bird boxes.

‘Open ones are used more by robins whereas the smaller-holed entrance is sought more often by tits and jays.

‘We are making sure everything we can do is recycled.

‘The wood is old pallets, the hinges are made from inner tube.

‘The crew don’t use the cutting machines for the pallet but they cut the bamboo, stick it all together and they sand down the wood.’
