Community project could help to fund park pagoda repairs

SAUMAREZ PARK’S Japanese pagoda may need community help to fund its restoration costs before repairs can begin.

Further work is being done to determine the costs of restoring the fishing hut, which is managed by Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services, and a request for capital funding will be resubmitted in 2020.

A spokesman for ACLMS said the funding needed would be based on its current condition and an estimation as to when repairs would begin would be dependent on when and how they received funding for it.

‘As is standard practice, the capital bid will be assessed alongside others from across the States, which together forms the capital spend programme for property,’ the spokesman said.

‘It has been recognised that the value of capital bids far exceeds the money available and therefore there is no guarantee that any bid will be successful.

‘ACLMS is looking into the possibility of developing a community project to help with the restoration.’

The spokesman added that although the structure is in poor condition there is no immediate concern that it will collapse. However, people are advised not to enter it. ‘The Japanese Hut at Saumarez Park is recognised as being greatly valued by the community,’ the spokesman said.

‘But it is in need of some repairs to the platform and the roof, as a result it has been closed off for public safety reasons.’

The fishing hut was last surveyed in 2016 and several repairs to the platform and railings have been undertaken since then. More-extensive works are now required.
