Hottest June day for five years, but heatwave is over

SCHOOLCHILDREN and surfers were down at Vazon enjoying the sunshine on the hottest day of the year so far.

The end of primary school week for Amherst Primary School Year 6 pupils would usually have been camping, but although that has not gone ahead, they have continued with their planned activities, including a day at Vazon yesterday on the hottest June day since 2015. The temperature reached 29.2C (84.6F) just after 1pm yesterday, the hottest June day since 2015 when it reached 29.4C.

And while the sun scorched the pavements, islanders took to the sea to cool down.

Donning wetsuits were Year 6 pupils from Amherst Primary School as they enjoyed a lesson with Guernsey Surf School.

‘We’ve been on the beach all day,’ said 11-year-old Kobi Nagy.

‘It’s been really great to be in the sun and we’re all having a good time – this will be my third time surfing.’

Fellow pupil Lucy Falla, 11, added that it was extremely hot and she had relished being able to cool off by having a splash in the water.

Frankie Martel, also 11, also said it would be fun to try surfing because she and some of her classmates had not done so before.

‘I’ve always wanted to try it,’ she said.

‘I do body boarding with my family, so this will be fun and it beats being in school.

‘Plus I’ve packed my wallet for an ice cream afterwards, just in case.’

Teacher Val Kilpatrick said it had been touch and go whether they would have been able to put on these sort of activities this year.

‘We always go to camp in the last week of June, but with the coronavirus we thought it might not happen this year,’ she said.

‘We kept our bookings though and luckily we still could, it would have been sad if we couldn’t do this as the kids really look forward to it.

‘So as well as camping we’ve been climbing and taking part in some forest activities in Le Guet, with the beach today and Pembroke tomorrow and the weather’s been so fine for it all.’

Also enjoying the sunshine were pupils from the Elizabeth College Junior School, who were on Lihou yesterday as well as today as part of their annual Year 6 residential trip.

A Guernsey Met office spokesman confirmed it had been the hottest day of the year so far, getting close to the hottest June day ever, which was 30.8C on 26 June 1976.

The hottest day ever in Guernsey was in August 2003 at 34.3C (93.7F).

However, temperatures are now set to drop.

‘This has been a lovely period, which is now coming to an end and we’re likely to see some rain showers by the weekend,’ the spokesman said. ‘The temperature will start to fall as a westerly wind comes through.’

This morning will see mist, which should clear by noon allowing for sunny periods, but with a maximum temperature of 20C.
