The bags appear to have been thrown by the same culprit as they are all filled similarly and tied carefully before being discarded up and down the lane. However, there was also other rubbish left along the lane, including a jacket, empty milk cartons and bits of cardboard.
St Peter Port senior constable Dennis Le Moignan said he knew the lane well and had not been aware of any problem of fly-tipping there before.
‘It’s a well-used area, which I use a lot and it’s unusual to see any amount of fly-tipping there,’ he said.
‘People should know by now that fly-tipping is illegal and there’s no excuse to do it, not when there is [free] recycling available in the island.
‘It is taken seriously and people will be fined if they are found to be doing it.
‘Put simply, do not fly-tip, you will be punished.’
Douzenier Rosie Henderson said she felt dismayed by the lack of respect.
‘It’s tragic that people feel the need to dump rubbish, especially considering they are cans that could be recycled in the blue bags,’ she said.
‘Because it’s so close to Town too, an area that would see many people frequent, it’s an awful shame.
‘The parish has many people who would do a lot to help make sure areas are cared for, but it’s a big area and we’re pretty busy.
‘I’d hope that people would not be anti-social and do this sort of thing, it’s unacceptable. We all need to take responsibility of looking after our home.’
A spokesman for Traffic & Highway Services said it had arranged for the bags to be removed.
‘We would like to issue a reminder that fly-tipping is an offence,’ said the spokesman.
‘There is never an excuse for fly-tipping, and as these appear to be aluminium cans they could easily, and at no expense, be placed in recycling bags to be collected directly from their address.’
