Just one former deputy makes it back into the States
ONLY one of nine former deputies who had been looking to return to the assembly were successful.
Yvonne Burford was first elected in 2012 and was Environment minister from May 2014 before she lost her seat in 2016.
Deputy-elect Burford said it was overwhelming to get elected again after polling 9,293 votes.
‘I was not at all confident that I would get in, let alone get the number of votes I did,’ she said.
‘I would have stood anyway, whether it was island-wide voting or not, and you work with the voting system you’ve got.’
Deputy-elect Burford had previously declared an interest in being on Home Affairs, Policy & Resources and Scrutiny but she said she would wait and see.
‘There are no guarantees and it’s not about personal ambitions, but getting the right team together.’
Ivan Rihoy was hoping to be returned to the Assembly after eight years.
‘I did 27 years in the States, fought two island-wide conseiller elections, and my political record is something I can be proud of,’ he said.
He said he accepted defeat gracefully and wished the new States all the best for the future.
David Inglis said that while he was pleased with the votes he got [4,916], others got more.
‘It was a step in to the unknown where you didn’t know where the bar would be and it was 6,475 in the end,’ he said. ‘I’m a little disappointed as personally I thought I drove a good campaign.’
Garry Collins said he felt like a bridesmaid again.
‘In both 2012 and 2016 I finished seventh in the Vale,’ he said. ‘In 2012 I got in when there was 45 members in the Chamber but I didn’t in 2016 when the number was reduced to 38.
‘I would have got back this time had there still been 45 seats. I’m immensely proud to have got 6,000 votes and as a former deputy I probably did things that some people might not have been happy with. Now I’ll be putting politics to one side and concentrating on my career in finance and sports administration.’
Jenny Tasker, who was in the States until 2012, said she thought there were still outstanding issues which needed to be addressed such as population management and re-visiting zero-10.
Elis Bebb, Darren Duquemin, Sandra James and Scott Ogier also failed to get elected.
