A military parade featuring hundreds of armed forces personnel got proceedings underway at about 10.30am, before the arrival of Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.

She was welcomed to the island by Lieutenant Governor, Lt-General Richard Cripwell and Bailiff Sir Richard McMahon, and undertook an inspection of the parade.

She then gave a speech on behalf of the King.

‘I’m delighted to return to Guernsey, and thank you for inviting me to join you as you celebrate Liberation Day and remember those who lived through occupation or deportation,‘ she said.

‘I look forward to meeting and learning much more from many of you later today.’

The princess continued to make her way along the seafront, before arriving at Town Church for a service.

Events are continuing into the afternoon and evening, with the cavalcade and a first-ever drone show among the highlights.
