All patients registering problems such as a temperature, persistent cough or flu-like symptoms will be referred for testing and treatment at the new facility.

The centre is intended to ensure those with possible coronavirus are isolated from other patients.

Based at the Healthcare Group’s existing site at the Galleries du Manoir complex in St Martin’s, the service will have a dedicated entrance operating from the former Goodies Too store which has been refurbished.

‘Patient safety and wellbeing are always at the forefront of our minds. This new centre will allow us to ensure provision of primary healthcare treatment to those patients with possible coronavirus, while at the same time cutting the risk of infection among the mainstream patient population,’ said Healthcare Group chairman Dr Michael McCarthy.

‘At the height of the coronavirus outbreak on the island there was significant fear of infection, which meant many patients put off going to see their doctor.

‘Our new facility at Galleries du Manoir addresses this fear. It ensures patients can attend their normal health centres at the Rohais, Cobo, High Street and St Martin’s without fear of mixing with patients who may have been exposed to the virus.

‘There will be dedicated parking outside the new clinic to ensure patients can be tested without getting out of their car if this is appropriate.

‘The winter months will most likely see a spike in the number of patients with cold and flu-like symptoms. We want to ensure that patients with these symptoms can be seen and tested as necessary. While we are hopeful there will not be a second wave of infections in Guernsey, we want to be totally prepared.

‘Patients registered at one of our surgeries showing symptoms associated with coronavirus should call their normal surgery number and an appointment will be given to attend the new centre.’
