Self-isolation group in gift plea

A group of island volunteers is hoping to ensure that people who are self-isolating this festive season can still celebrate with a gift or two with a call to islanders to help them do this.

The Guernsey Isolation Support Group is looking to provide support in delivering gifts they hope to receive from public donations to people self-isolating at Christmas and the parents who may have forgotten that last little present for their children, as well as to the grandparents people are unable to see and the friend who might be alone for Christmas.

One of the organisers, Heidi Billien, said it was time to take a moment to think about those who may be unable to see or spend time with loved ones, whether that be those that are shielding or those that need to quarantine.

‘To make this magic happen and to give a true sense of #GuernseyTogether at this important time, we’re asking for islanders’ help in the way of a reverse advent calendar,’ she said.

‘We are asking for people to either donate one or two items or if they would like to donate a hamper.

‘It would be nice if boxes were aimed at different family types, so for the elderly, people on their own, young couples, families with small children, these would be amazing as you could include things like reindeer food and non-perishable goods up until the 10 December then we will welcome fresh items after this. Our aim is to try our best to make it magical regardless of the circumstances.’

She added that the group had been approached to lead the initiative by somebody who was looking to put their trust in them and further help support local businesses.

Whatever was collected would then also be delivered by the group to those in need, based on a trust and honesty basis.

‘This is what the Guernsey Spirit is all about, trusting one another and helping where we can,’ said Mrs Billien.

‘We will be asking people to message for requests for support with their email address soon, where we will then send on an enquiry form.

‘Please note this is for emergency two or three items or one hamper maximum, as we want to share across as many families as possible who are isolating or shielding closer to the time.

‘Together we can make a difference and make this Christmas special for everyone and I would like to think it would make their time away from loved ones more bearable.’
