The 85m.-long Aeolus, which is owned by Dutch business Van Oord, had sailed from Rotterdam.
She was heading to St Brieuc where a major wind farm with 62 turbines is being built..
From a distance it looked similar to the Orion, the oil rig which ran aground at Grandes Rocques in 1978.
The offshore installation vessel was put into service in 2014.
Its giant crane can lift more than 1,600 tonnes, which makes the Aeolus suitable for the transport and installation of foundations and wind turbines.
It has an advanced jacking system. Four giant legs, each measuring 85 metres and weighing 1,280 tonnes, allow Aeolus to be jacked up and work in waters up to 45 metres deep.
Van Oord is family-owned company with more than 150 years of experience as an international marine contractor.
