Harbour and fire crew tackle Divette blaze
FIREFIGHTERS and harbour staff united to put out a vegetation fire on the cliff path above Divette Bay yesterday morning.
Two fire engines parked up on Jerbourg Road and firefighters worked hard in intense heat to run the hoses down the winding path to the difficult-to-reach blaze.
Smoke surrounded the area, and walkers and beach goers were sent back up to the road.
The Guernsey Harbours’ workboat, the Sarnia, helped by pumping water from the sea to land.
Firefighters believe a tree caught fire above the bay. They were called at 10.10am, the site was clear two-and-a-half hours later on what was the hottest day of the year so far, with the Guernsey Met Office confirming a temperature of 27.1C recorded just after 1pm.
A Guernsey Harbours representative said it was particularly important during this spell of hot weather to make sure that cigarette butts and litter was disposed of properly. Anyone using a disposable barbecue should make that when they leave the surrounding area is sufficiently cool and poses no risk of catching fire.
n Today is set to be another warm day, but temperatures will start to slowly dip towards 20C as the week goes on.
At the end of the weekend the wind is expected swing around to the north west, which could bring temperatures down to the high teens.
