Tomorrow the procession will honour the Catholic tradition of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Both Saturday and Sunday evening, the Little Chapel Foundation will leave the lighting on at the chapel until 11pm for the public to experience the site in a new light.
The event has happened every year since the 1950s, with particular importance for local Catholics, according to Luke O’Donnell, a member of the Catholic Church in Guernsey.
‘It’s not easy for Guernsey Catholics to get to traditional pilgrimage sites in the UK or France,’ Mr O’Donnell said.
‘The Little Chapel is almost a replica of the Lourdes in France so it brings some of that tradition to Guernsey. The Little Chapel was originally a place of worship and it’s good to use it for its original purpose of prayer.’
To celebrate the universality of the church, Mr O’Donnell said the Rosary prayers are led in five different languages throughout the procession.
‘This event is important for the community because it brings people together. For many people in Guernsey, they enjoy coming together for this procession each year – it’s become a custom,’ said Mr O’Donnell.
The procession begins at the entrance to Blanchelande College at 8.30pm, and proceeds through the grounds of Les Vauxbelets.
Attendees will pray the Rosary and sing hymns for about an hour, before the procession concludes at the Little Chapel.
