All hands on deck as work starts on repairs to Rousse Pier

A VERY weather-beaten Rousse Pier is being repaired this week, with Stoneworks Ltd working against the tide and wind to complete the project.

This follows concerns about gaps made by storms and gradual erosion which has worn the pier down.

‘There are big voids underneath – it’s a bit of a mess so we’re just going for it, really,’ said site foreman Gareth Jones from Stoneworks Ltd.

‘We are completely governed by tides but we are hoping to be finished by Friday.’

Working time has been reduced due to changing tides, but measures have been put in place to ensure the concrete has set before the pier becomes submerged with water.

‘We use an additive to accelerate setting time,’ Mr Jones said.

‘It’s cold, wet, and damp so the work takes a bit longer.’

Scaffolding will be put up at the site and cranes have also been at work to lift the copings. Public access to the pier is limited while work is taking place.

Mr Jones added: ‘The wind and tide are really against us.

‘It’s all hands on deck.’

Rousse Mooring Committee special constable Rodney Norman was pleased that concerns about the pier had been acted on so quickly.

‘It’s nice to know they have been so quick to do it,’ he said.

‘It would have got worse and worse if it was left deteriorating with the bad weather.’

He said complaints were often put aside and not immediately acted on, so was thankful the work was being done.

‘We’ve had some good comments from people,’ he added.
