Banishing the blues with Brew Monday

Guernsey Mind, Samaritans, Healthcare Group and Victoria Park came together for Brew Monday to put a positive spin on what is meant to be the most depressing day of the year.

Between 12pm and 2pm islanders were offered free hot drinks from Nutmeg and a chance to talk to others and Guernsey Mind mental health first aiders.

‘It’s really just about turning Blue Monday on its head,’ said Lisa Ingrouille, workplace lead at Guernsey Mind.

‘Blue Monday is not actually a real thing, it was coined by a marketing company.

‘It might not be the most depressing day for someone, people can experience that at various times of their life, so we have tried to put a positive spin and change it to Brew Monday to encourage people to come and meet up and talk.’

There were other Brew Monday events at various cafes around the island yesterday, including at Grow Ltd and the Swallows Cafe at Les Cotils.

‘I think talking and community is extremely important for mental health,’ said Dr Sally Richardson, GP at Healthcare Group.

‘It normalises it and takes the taboo away, but also has the ability to improve mental health.’
