Lilita Kruze, who is Guernsey’s honorary consul for the Republic of Latvia, began donating items she had knitted in lockdown to charities based in the country.
After contacting the maternity hospital in the capital city of Riga, she found that warm hats for new-born babies were in demand, particularly for those fleeing the conflict.
‘I shared the idea with family and friends who were all happy for me to go ahead with it. I’m not sure how many I’m hoping to send, it all depends on the response,’ said Ms Kruze.
More than 4,300 people have taken refuge in Latvia since the start of the conflict.
‘I saw that a young Ukrainian lady had to give birth in Latvia and I wanted to help young Ukrainian families.
‘Knitting is a very relaxing pastime and the hats are absolutely needed,’ said Mrs Kruze.
