Redevelopment work starts at La Grande Mare Hotel
DEMOLITION is under way at La Grande Mare Hotel as the resort makes the first step towards its complete redesign and renovation.
Billionaire owner Stephen Lansdown purchased the site in 2019 and has since worked with the Development & Planning Authority to secure permission to go ahead with the multi-million pound investment.
He finally received planning permission in December 2021 – 18 months after his first attempt.
The planning application for the site proposed the demolition of the existing buildings, which date from the 1970s, and driving range.
They would be replaced with a country club-style building containing a golf club, health and fitness club, restaurant and event facilities, 15 self-catering visitor accommodation lodges, a new driving range and academy building, with storage sheds and parking, a new parking area, new access off Le Gele Road, and the extension and remodelling of the existing golf course.
In February 2022, the purchase of Vistas was confirmed to form part of the resort as a beach cafe and a venue for health club members.
La Grande Mare closed completely in February with work to remove derelict greenhouses around the green-keeping area imminent, however members have been reassured that the golf pro shop and health club would remain open during the development of the new country club.
Now, the first steps of demolition are under way as machinery has been seen pulling the main building apart, kickstarting the process which is set to be complete in 2025.
