Donkey Derby a non-runner
THE Donkey Derby has been cancelled due to lack of people power to host the event.
It had been planned for Saturday 20 August, but the annual Lions Club event has been placed on hold for the time being, with organisers hoping to be back bigger and better next year.
‘It was a very difficult decision to make, but like other charities, numbers are diminishing and we don’t have the people power,’ said Lions Club president Paul Allaway.
‘Being hit by Covid and also the expense of bring the donkeys over as well as covering our own expenses is a lot.
‘We are really keen to host it, and we are in discussions with another charity to possibly collaborate next year and make it bigger and better than ever.’
The Donkey Derby was the one of the main fundraisers for the charity as other events are typically combined with other charities, but Mr Allaway hopes that the club will still be fundraising at events such as the North Show and Seafront Sunday.
The last Donkey Derby was in 2019. The 2020 event was swapped to hold the Guernsey Together festival instead. Last year’s was cancelled due to Covid.
