Thunder Child II, a 23-metre vessel, visited St Sampson’s harbour on the first stop of its challenge.

Photographer Tony Rive captured the vessel refuelling, and said that it took 6,000 litres of diesel from a Rubis road tanker before leaving island waters and heading to Le Coruna in Spain for its next refuel.

Mr Rive said that the powerboat arrived at about 5.45pm on Wednesday and left an hour later.

Thunder Child II and her crew, led by Nick Ogden, who has strong Jersey connections, set off from St Katherine Docks near Tower Bridge in London early on Wednesday to head to Monaco. They are carrying a personal letter from the Lord Mayor of the City of London, the Rt Hon. Vincent Keaveny, addressed to HRH Prince Albert of Monaco, to present on their arrival.

The vessel was one of the main attractions at the Jersey Boat Show last month. As well as the big goal of setting a record for the London to Monaco trip, the 54 Knots team is also fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Last month the team, named afer the boat's top speed, established a new mark for the crossing from Cork to Jersey, covering the 280-nautical-mile stretch in just under nine hours and raising money for the Jersey Hospice. The current trip is some 2,100 nautical miles. Mr Mortlock is broadcasting the journey, and updates the ‘Super Yacht Captain’ social media pages.
