The towers of terror and pumpkin-inspired desserts will be judged for their spookiness, technical skill and taste at what is being called the Great Charity Bake Off.

‘It is our first year of the bake off, and it doesn’t just need to be cakes, it can be biscuits or any sweet treat,’ said Mandy Rowlinson, the charity’s fundraising manager.

‘The judging will be 60% from our judges and 40% from the public, so hopefully as many people as possible can attend and help out with the vote.’

There are five categories to choose from, including a biscuit baking and decorating challenge for children, show-stoppers, and ‘free-from’ – which must be gluten free, dairy free or vegan.

The overall winner will take home a JT One Ultra package worth £684.

‘The phenomenal success of programmes like the Great British Bake Off has inspired people to try their hand at chocolate ganache, baked Alaska and even show-stopping toadstool cakes,’ said Mrs Rowlinson.

‘The judges will be looking for the wow factor, and if they taste good too they should be onto a winning formula because those that don’t want to bake and are just there for cake can vote for their favourites too.’

Judging will be led by the wife of the Lt-Governor, Louise Cripwell, who is the patron of Autism Guernsey.

She will be joined by Kate Marshall, head of Guernsey enterprise at JT.

‘I’m really looking forward to seeing and sampling the cakes and desserts. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of Autism Guernsey and get all those would-be bakers who have been inspired by the TV show to have a go and have some fun,’ she said.

Anyone who does not want to get involved in the baking can still attend the event to vote for their favourite bake and take part in the raffle, and islanders of all ages can get involved.

Cakes will be available to buy and the show-stopper entries will be auctioned off at 4pm.

The event is taking place at Les Cotils between 9 and 10.30am on Saturday.

Contestants must register prior to then and include a list of the ingredients included in their bake.

Entry forms are available from Autism Guernsey by calling Mrs Rowlinson on 01481 232879 or emailing office@autismguernsey.org.gg
