Les Voies has playground like all the other schools

FORMER Australian rugby star David Campese was a surprise special guest at the official opening of a new playground at Les Voies School after the pandemic delayed the fundraising efforts of the Guernsey Wooden Spoon.

Previously the only school for primary-aged children without play equipment, the Wooden Spoon started fundraising for Les Voies four years ago.

‘The project was a long time in the making because of Covid, but it is superb to finally be able to deliver the equipment to Les Voies, especially as it was the only school on the island without it,’ said Karen Solway, of the Guernsey Wooden Spoon.

Lt-Governor Lt General Richard Cripwell went to the school yesterday morning to cut the red ribbon linking two wooden spoons to officially open the play area, which cost £22,000.

The former rugby star, a Rugby World Cup winner, proved a huge hit with students who spent the day watching videos of his highlight reel.

‘We had a lovely morning with the governor and it was so great to have David Campese at the school as well, thanks to the Wooden Spoon,’ said Les Voies head teacher Jon Furley.

‘We are so grateful to the Wooden Spoon and everyone who contributed to the playground, this will bring so much fun and joy to the students and really adds to the school.’

Pupil Leo Le Page, 10, was excited to create new games with his friends on the equipment.

‘It’s really good that we have somewhere climb as we didn’t have anything like this before,’ he said.

‘We like to challenge ourselves to climb around the whole circuit without touching the floor.’

The play area will be used by pupils during their pre-planned breaks and lunchtimes, but can also be used as an intervention if students need a physical activity break.

Other contributors to the project were Martin Search from Ray & Scott Jewellers, Steve Roussel of Ronez, and Four Seasons Gardens.
