The charity has prepared a large stock of Union Jack-coloured flowers for islanders’ gardens in time for the King’s Coronation on Saturday and Liberation Day on Tuesday.

‘We’re encouraging people to plant red, white and blue flowers for the King’s Coronation and for Liberation Day,’ said Grow’s horticultural manager Stuart Smale.

‘We have a lot of red and white geraniums and blue petunias for sale. The crew have really enjoyed it and they’ve been involved in every aspect of the planting and seed sowing.’

They started preparing flowers for the Coronation and Liberation celebrations in the second week of January.

‘There’s a lot of work that goes into getting a good healthy plant. You have to pinch out the centres and take out the flower buds while they’re young to encourage them to get to a decent size before they flower,’ said Mr Smale.

‘This time of year really showcases all the hard work and this is the finished article. Each plant has been potted and cared for individually. It teaches the crew to take responsibility and to care for something following a process.’

Grow is also creating a Coronation flag made of flowers at Castle Cornet later this week, and providing flowers for Notre Dame, which is making its own Coronation-themed flower display.
