An application for the two new facilities has been submitted as part of the charity's reorganisation and wildlife hospital project.

‘We are excited to unveil and display the plans for the new proposed buildings for the kennels and ferret build. Now the hard work starts to raise the funds needed,’ said GSPCA manager Steve Byrne.

‘We are hoping to go out to tender for these and the wildlife hospital in September.’

The plans seek to demolish the existing cattery, which is now unfit for purpose, and construct a new dog kennel for rehoming dogs and canine welfare cases.

The new kennel will be a single storey, occupying the same footprint as the existing building, with a small extension and flat roof construction. The massing and height will be significantly reduced.

A bespoke ferret house is proposed to the west of the site consisting of seven pens, a safety corridor and a store room.

The ferret unit would sit adjacent to existing buildings on site, to the south and east of it.

It would be lower than the adjacent buildings and does not break the skyline. The existing earth bank and vegetation to the roadside will also be retained.

The builds have been designed to be as cost-effective as possible, including simple forms and construction methods.

An asbestos survey will be carried out prior to demolition. Existing footing will be reused where possible, minimising the need for new groundworks and sending waste to landfill.

All recyclable waste will be sorted and separated on site.
