HSC working on regulation of vape sales
A policy letter on the regulation of the sale of vapes could be published later this year.
Health & Social Care stated last year that it would be working towards the regulation of e-cigarettes. That stance has not changed since September last year when the committee said it would expect regulation of vapes to include the promotion of the products and a ban on selling to under-18s in the first instance.
A ban on disposable vapes was also being considered.
‘The other principal committees are currently being asked for their feedback on the proposals, which will inform the committee’s policy letter to the States expected to be published later this year,’ said HSC vice-president Tina Bury.
Environment & Infrastructure president Lindsay de Sausmarez said that she was supportive of HSC’s work towards greater regulation of vapes, especially as it is considering a potential ban on disposable vapes.
‘As well as improving the health of islanders, this will also bring with it environmental benefits, reducing the amount of waste entering the system and our natural environment,’ she said.
‘Disposable vapes are particularly difficult and expensive to recycle and waste valuable resources. The best way to reduce waste is to prevent the creation of it in the first place, so any measures that reduce the prevalence of vapes in the islands will be welcome from the perspective of our waste strategy.’
