Aurigny launched a weekly summer service to the Cornish seaside town for August and part of July.

But the Guernsey Press was unable to find anyone on the service in the 45 minutes before check-in closed on Tuesday afternoon at a quiet airport, even though one-way tickets to the Cornish resort were selling at just £39.99 hours before the flight.

The Guernsey Press asked questions of Aurigny about the uptake in flights on the weekly Newquay route, but the airline said it would not comment.

Prices for outbound flights over the summer are as low as £39.99 with inbound flights from £59.99.

Some seats on next Tuesday’s service to Newquay are blocked out, implying seats have been booked, but the one-way tickets are still only £39.99.

The cheapest flights to Gatwick on the same day are nearly £80.

Cornwall Airport Newquay’s head of commercial Amy Smith had previously said they were thrilled to welcome the new route.

‘It further highlights the growing appeal of Cornwall as a top travel destination and offers a good link to the Channel Islands. We look forward to a successful partnership.’

At the time of launch Aurigny chief commercial officer Sudeep Ghai said the route would give Guernsey people the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Cornish coast, as well as bringing people into the Bailiwick.

The service was announced at the same time as the Paris Charles de Gaulle flights, which do appear to have been successful, particularly given the Olympics.

The Newquay service runs until 27 August.
