Afternoon tea for GVS long-servers
GUERNSEY Voluntary Service enjoyed a celebratory afternoon tea in the sun at Government House for members who have received their 30-year long service awards.
Service volunteers, staff, directors and the fundraising team were treated to an afternoon tea with cake, tea and sandwiches.
The event was hosted by Lt-Governor’s wife Louise Cripwell, the charity’s patron.
Some volunteers who have done more than 30 years service may not now be actively volunteering, but are still members.
‘We’ve got 30 volunteers who have received the 30-year volunteer award,’ said service manager Mandy Le Bachelet.
Established 75 years ago, the charity cares for and assists the elderly community through initaitives such as blood donor services and bathing services.
The charity holds two social clubs, Jubilee and Russels, for older islanders who would otherwise be isolated at home, giving them company and keeping them active.
GVS has changed and evolved over the years to suit the population’s needs. Many clients are between 80 to 90 years old and have a long-term illness or dementia.
Meals on Wheels provides roughly 25,000 meals a year for those who cannot cook for themselves.
‘We’re not just delivering a meal, we’re also keeping an eye on the people we’re serving meals to,’ said Mrs Le Bachelet.
There is a real sense of community and companionship within the charity.
The clients receive the help they need, and for volunteers helping is just as rewarding. Guernsey Voluntary Service hopes to continue the good work and hopes for more volunteers to offer their time.
‘Anyone who can spare time either for Meals on Wheels or the social clubs,’ said Mrs Le Bachelet.
