States looks to give former information kiosk a future

BUS users are uncertain over what they would like to see at the terminus, in place of a disused hexagonal kiosk.

The former visitor information kiosk is vacant and becoming an eyesore as its appearance deteriorates due to vandalism and graffiti.

The States Property Unit is welcoming interest from businesses, private individuals, charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Bus users at the terminus yesterday said they did not know what they would make of it.

‘Either make use of it or knock it down,’ one bus user said.

‘One option could be another type of information centre, tourist-related, but not for the buses.’

Sheila Barry uses the bus regularly.

‘A lot of visitors and tourists get confused because it still says visitor information on it,’ she said.

‘There’s the bus information across the road, but the hut is still the first information point you see when you come off the bus. I’ve had to direct people across the road many times.’

One daily bus user, who arrived in Town with her mother and daughter, said that a food outlet might be useful.

‘Some sort of food business was the first thing that came to mind because I’m often stood here waiting for the bus with the kids,’ she said.

‘That or use it for another information purpose, it’s a good location for that.’

The kiosk was historically used to give bus users information, but over the last 10 years that function has moved to a shop on South Esplanade, behind the terminus.

Expressions of interest will need to outline the intended use of the kiosk, which will be assessed based on the proposed benefit to the local economy and community.

No financial information is required at this stage.

Expressions of interest should be submitted in a sealed envelope marked ‘Expression of Interest – Hexagonal Kiosk’, addressed to Rachel Le Page, States Property Unit, Sir Charles Frossard House, St Peter Port, GY1 1FH.

The deadline is at noon on Wednesday 5 February.
