A new spider’s web climbing frame could soon be going up at Saumarez Park.

An appeal launched by a local charity 18 months ago has raised enough funds to complete the purchase of a new web after safety concerns forced the removal of the old one.

The States has been urged to get on with final preparations on the area to allow the new web to be installed as soon as possible.

Guernsey Wooden Spoon chairwoman Karen Solway said the grounds of the park were too wet to put the apparatus up over the winter months, and then other unforeseen circumstances delayed installation further.

‘Since then there has been much deterioration, which means the States has to do more work than we would have hoped,’ she said.

Agriculture, Countryside & Land Management Services, part of the Environment & Infrastructure Committee, confirmed it was on the case and trying to get the grounds ready for the new equipment.

Miss Solway hoped the installation would be sooner rather than later, but still had no firm timings.

‘We will be delighted if the States can make this a priority, as I am sure many families and children would like the spider’s web back,’ she said.

‘This is now long overdue and we are disappointed that it has not been been installed yet and we would really like to see this happen as soon as possible.’

But she said the charity’s project was ‘in the hands’ of the States for the time being.

A spokesman for the States said that preparatory work included removing rotten wood chip flooring to check the condition of the ground underneath, load testing the anchor points of the original web to assess their integrity and working out if a new type of safety flooring was required.

‘We are currently having conversations to arrange for all this to be carried out as soon as possible,’ he said.

‘However, our small team has to manage this alongside a number of competing priorities.’

Following public disappointment, Guernsey Wooden Spoon launched a fund raising push to buy a new one, and it has now been confirmed that was successful.

The new apparatus is currently being stored, awaiting its installation.
