Canvassing ‘walking lists’ to be made available to candidates

Election candidates will be provided with a ‘walking list’ of voters to enable them to knock on doors more easily – but they will have to pay for them.

Candidates will be asked to pay about £15 for each parish list, it is understood.

States Assembly & Constitution Committee president Carl Meerveld responded to complaints from colleagues and said yesterday afternoon that walking lists would be made available from next week.

He said that the non-availability of the lists had been ‘an oversight’.

‘Candidates just needed a solution and I completely agreed. The lists provided were just not practical to use. A walking guide is much more convenient for anyone who intends to go knocking on doors.’

The lack of a walking list was a cause of concern for more than one experienced candidate after their nominations went in on Monday.

Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller was one of those who complained about no list being available.

‘I’m really happy that they’ve managed to do this so quickly and it’s going to be essential for anyone going door-to-door. I’m looking forward to getting started, I might start around my parish this weekend,' she said.

‘It’s my intention to get to every parish but how many I will do I don’t know. But this is really good news and will be welcomed by all candidates, especially the new ones I’m sure.’
