New specialised housing units finally ready for residents

La Vieille Plage, the Guernsey Housing Association’s new specialised housing development, has officially been completed, eight months behind schedule.

The GHA site has been designed to support islanders with a range of physical and learning disabilities, and will provide high-quality, purpose-built accommodation for 14 residents.

‘La Vieille Plage is a specialised housing development that has been designed entirely around the people who will call it home,’ said Lisa de Kooker, chief operating officer at GHA.

‘Every detail of the building has been carefully considered to support independence and dignity, with care delivered in a way that works for residents and not limited by the building itself.

‘We are incredibly proud to have worked with HSC to deliver this for the island. It’s really exciting to have people move into a place that has been created just for them, where they can feel supported, build their independence and enjoy a better quality of life.’

The flats at Sandy Hook, in St Sampson’s, have been beset with delays, having originally been due for completion last summer. The development has been designed with input from Health & Social Care to support residents with varying levels of need, helping them to live as independently as possible.

Each of the one-bedroom flats includes its own kitchen and bathroom, alongside shared communal spaces to encourage social interaction and a sense of community.

The building also includes dedicated facilities for staff, including an office, overnight accommodation, and a therapy room to support residents’ wellbeing.

The flats are currently being fitted with specialist equipment ahead of residents moving in and an official opening.

Health & Social Care Committee president George Oswald said projects like La Vieille Plage showed what could be achieved when services were designed around the needs of the people who rely on them.

‘By working closely with the GHA, we’ve been able to create a purpose‑built environment for those with complex needs that enables residents to live more independently, supported by a space that truly works for them. I’m grateful to everyone involved for helping deliver something that will make a real difference to people’s lives.’

DRP Architecture was the architect for the project and Rihoy & Son, the main contractors.
