The UK Coop was targeted by hackers at the end of last month. While customer data in the Channel Islands was never under threat, there have been knock-on effects to deliveries as ordering systems in the UK were compromised.
CI Coop chief executive Mark Cox told customers that it would take a little time to fully return to normal, however availability of products in stores would continue to improve every day.
‘Thanks to the swift and proactive action taken by the wider Coop Group, the impact of the cyber attack has been contained,’ he said in a letter to members.
‘This means we’re in a much stronger position, and our stores have started receiving regular deliveries again. You should begin to see more of the products you rely on returning to your local store from this weekend.’
M&S was targeted in similar attacks which have led to it shutting down all online ordering.
Coop’s UK IT team made the decision to take computer services offline, preventing criminals from continuing their attack, which may explain why it has recovered more quickly.
Mr Cox added that staff were very grateful for customer patience and support.
‘Please be assured that our teams are working hard behind the scenes to restore full service as quickly and safely as possible,’ he said. ‘I want to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience you may still experience in the meantime.’
