More than 1,500 people donned loud pink attire as they began their walk from either Grandes Rocques or Bordeaux and finished in Market Square in town on Saturday evening.

Pink Ladies chairwoman Naomi Leach was delighted at the numbers involved.

‘Everyone doing this is digging deep to celebrate and commemorate loved ones whose lives have been impacted by cancer, and that is something to be so proud of,’ she said.

‘The number of people who come together to take part every year is amazing. As organisers, we’re incredibly grateful.’

Friends Gabrielle French and Leigh Clouston were taking part in the walk for the first time, and were walking for friends, family and work colleagues who had been diagnosed with cancer in the past.

‘Someone I worked with got breast cancer and ended up going through six weeks of chemotherapy,’ Ms Clouston said.

‘Watching her go through that was quite scary. Fortunately, she managed to recover, but that’s what has motivated me to do the walk today.’

Becca Hunter and her daughter Charlotte, 14, had Charlotte’s aunt Sophie in their thoughts as they made their way to town from Bordeaux.

‘It’s the first time we’ve done it together, but I did it last year as well,’ Charlotte said.

‘My auntie is currently going through breast cancer, so we thought it would be a good way to show her how much we are thinking about her.’

Mrs Hunter added she had enjoyed the overall vibe of the walk.

‘It’s been so lovely seeing everyone out in pink, walking along the coast on such a beautiful evening.

‘It makes you happy and grateful to be alive.’

Sarah Stranger was one of a large group of family members walking for friends and other loved ones.

‘A friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer two years ago,’ she said.

‘It’s something that affects almost everyone these days, so we try and show as much support as we can.’

That support has been reflected in her family’s walking efforts – this was their third Sunset Walk, while they have also previously taken part in the Race For Life.

On this occasion they had decided to go all out with their costumes, sporting pink tutus and cowboy hats as part of their costumes.

‘It’s all part of the fun and gets you into it more,’ she said.
