Aurigny has struggled to recruit and particularly to retain pilots in recent years.
It admitted at the weekend that the main problems with fulfilling flight schedules last month was the availability of pilots, and lack of resilience in case of crew sickness.
But it said that it had just recruited seven pilots which, once trained, would boost its officer numbers by 30%.
Then it was announced today that Aurigny will become an official career partner of the low cost carrier Norse Atlantic UK, offering first officers at the beginning of their careers the opportunity to operate ATR aircraft between Guernsey, the UK and Europe.
After gaining the required experience, pilots will then have the opportunity to progress to flying Norse Atlantic UK’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners to destinations including North America, South Africa and Thailand.
Aurigny said the initiative would strengthen its talent pool, and also support Norse Atlantic UK’s need for a steady stream of experienced and high-quality first officers.
‘I am thrilled to be part of developing this exciting career pathway for Aurigny first officers as well as future cadet entry pilots who are initially joining Aurigny and contribute to a vital service for our island community,’ said Aurigny chief operating officer Philip Smallwood.
‘As they continue to build their flying skills and gain the necessary experience, they will have the opportunity to progress to flying one of the world’s newest and most iconic jet aircraft. Ultimately, this makes Aurigny a more appealing long-term career choice for aspiring aviators.’
Norse Atlantic UK SVP operations and accountable manager David Thomas said the airline was delighted to collaborate with Aurigny.
‘Aurigny is the perfect partner given its high standards of training and experience of short haul operations along with its frequent services to our base at London Gatwick.
‘This partnership represents a win-win for Guernsey, aviation professionals, and both airlines, ensuring a future-ready aviation workforce and a compelling reason for pilots to start and grow their careers with Aurigny and Norse Atlantic UK.’
Norwegian-owned Norse Atlantic was founded in 2021. It is an ultra low cost carrier which exclusively flies Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
It recently announced a shift in market focus away from the United States and towards South-East Asia.
