Despite the island’s pass rate falling fractionally by 0.1% to 98.3%, it still above the UK pass rate of 97.4%.

The number of A*s and As was up by over 4% to 25.9%, although still short of the 28.2% seen in the UK.

New Education, Sport & Culture president Paul Montague was a teacher for almost 30 years.

‘I know how much hard work, commitment, worry, relief and joy is wrapped up in results day,’ he said.

‘These Level 3 qualifications (whether they are technical, vocational, A-Levels, IB Certificates or the previously released excellent IB Diploma results) aren’t just about exams, they’re about all the effort, challenges and successes that have brought students to this point. Today’s results reflect that dedication.

‘Be proud of what you’ve achieved. Whatever you do next, you are not just taking with you a grade, but the learning and character that got you there.’

At the Sixth Form Centre, where students collected results for the last time before the site move to La Mare de Carteret in the autumn, Chloe Guille achieved the grades she needed to study sports and exercise science at Exeter. She described waking up as ‘quite nerve-wracking,’ but felt the pressure lifting when she knew she had got into her first-choice university.

The Sixth Form Centre’s cohort of 161 students achieved 432 passes across A Level and IB, with an overall pass-rate of 96.6% and 17.9% at A*/A or equivalent and an average mark of Grade C.

The three private colleges all posted 100% pass rates.

At Ladies College more than nine out of 10 marks were between A* to C, with 41% A* or A.

Elizabeth College reported 78% of all grades were A* to C and more than a third graded A*/A.

At Blanchelande, Harry Langlois, who achieved two Cs and a D in law, English and psychology, respectively, plans to take a year out and do some inter-railing through Europe.

‘My results are pretty much what I expected,’ he said.

‘I really want to do a bit of travelling before I decide what I want to do next. I’ve done some legal work experience before so I might go back into that.’

At Elizabeth College head boy Zaheer Anees was one of four students to get A*s in all their subjects.

He is due to leave the island to study mechanical engineering at Bath.

‘I was slightly nervous about not getting what I needed and having to go through clearing,’ he said.

‘My goal is to work in Formula One, the results have given a big boost to my confidence, and make me think I can do it if I put in the hard work.
