Young performers from Rebellion Allstars have spent the week mastering new skills as part of their annual Circus Summer Camp, which will culminate in a final showcase this Saturday at the Performing Arts Centre.

The camp offers local children a unique opportunity to build confidence and physical abilities through a variety of circus arts, from aerial silks to juggling and tight-wire balancing.

For many, the camp is a highlight of the summer. Hollie Downes, 10, said her favourite part was the aerial silks.

‘It’s really fun, and you’re never not trying something new,’ she said, adding that she is excited to perform.

Cai Hoyte and Mia Larbalestier, 16, returned for a second year. Mia said they ‘loved learning new circus skills’ and it was ‘nice to show people what we’ve learned through the week’.

The camp was co-founded by local coach Stephanie Street, who was inspired to bring circus arts to the island because there was nothing else like it. Visiting coach Renato Pires, who travelled from the UK for the training, emphasised the sport’s inclusive and non-competitive nature.

‘The circus should be for everyone,’ he said.

He hoped the children would take away more than just skills, focusing on ‘friendships, resilience, and teamwork’.

The coaches noted the positive and enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the week, with students eager to learn. Mr Pires said he was most excited to see the children’s personalities ‘shining’ on the stage.

The final showcase is on Saturday at 2pm, where the young performers will demonstrate their learnings and energy in a vibrant display for family and friends.
