The parish douzaine had asked for the crossing to be installed at the crossroads of Tertre Lane and Rue des Coutures, which leads up to Vale School from the Bridge, but after ‘extensive correspondence’ the request was turned down by Traffic & Highway Services.

However, changes have been made to the junction, including dropped kerbs and tactile paving. The crossing had been requested following the construction of the new housing development in the lane.

Traffic has not ruled out the idea of a zebra crossing completely, however.

‘We did consider its possible installation at some future date should pedestrian numbers significantly increase and therefore ensured there was good provision for connecting to a power supply for new lighting columns on both sides of the crossing without having to trench across the resurfaced junction,’ THS is quoted as saying in a report on the Vale parish website.

Senior constable Richard Leale said the parish challenged the decision and received an explanation of why Traffic made its decision.

‘We’re grateful for the attention Traffic have given to our representations, nevertheless, the douzaine remains disappointed that the opportunity wasn’t taken to install a zebra crossing at outset,’ he said.

‘We will continue to monitor this and won’t hesitate to make further representations to the authorities if pedestrian safety becomes an issue.’

Work has just been completed on 11 new homes on a field near the junction. Back in 2008 an estate of 30 homes was built on Tertre Lane to form Le Courtil de Fontaine.
