Robert Sillars led the Education Committee between 2012 and 2016. In his time at the committee he closed St Andrew’s Primary School, proposed the rebuild of La Mare de Carteret Secondary School, and steered through the removal of the 11-plus. He lost his seat in the States at the 2016 general election.
He is now back as chairman of the Secondary School Partnership Cluster, encompassing Les Beaucamps High, Les Varendes High, St Sampson’s High and the Sixth Form Centre as one of three late appointments to the governance boards which were without a leader after the first round of selections.
Mr Sillars is joined by Stuart Jehan, who was an unsuccessful election candidate this summer with the Forward Guernsey party, and Andrew Ogier.
Mr Jehan will head up the South & West Schools Cluster, incorporating Castel, Forest, La Houguette and St Martin’s schools. He has an extensive background in corporate governance from his private sector experience and sits on the board of Citizens Advice Guernsey, and the parent-teacher association at La Houguette.
Mr Ogier will lead the North Primary Cluster, covering Hautes Capelles, La Mare de Carteret and the Vale. He too has held leadership roles and had governance experience in the private sector and is currently a community representative on the Hautes Capelles interim governance board.
‘We’re delighted to welcome three new chairs to the Education Governance Boards. Their extensive experience and commitment to education will further strengthen our system across the Bailiwick,’ said Education president Deputy Paul Montague.
‘With these appointments, every chair position across our boards is now filled. Together, the eight chairs bring remarkable expertise and
passion, driving our shared goal of giving every learner the best possible opportunity to thrive.’
Five board chairs had already been announced, including former Education Committee senior officer Jon Buckland and retired Alderney politician Ian Carter.
The role involves ensuring schools are well-supported, accountable to and ambitious for every learner, driving up standards in the schools.
Chairs will sit on the interview panels for principals and headteachers, be the spokesperson for boards, and lead their group of governors in supporting and challenging education setting leaders.
