After success with the England Under-21s in the summer and a positive start to the season with Bournemouth, England manager Thomas Tuchel has rewarded Scott with his first senior call-up for their World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania next week.
Scott, 22, played a handful of games for the Green Lions before he was snapped up by Lansdown’s Bristol City at the age of 16. GFC received no fee for the player as he was not under contract. Since then he has played for England at U18, U19, U20 and U21. He made the step up to playing Premier League football in 2023 and is now a regular starter for Bournemouth.
‘It’s amazing, I’m really proud and excited for him and his family,’ said Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance.
‘It’s no mean feat in this day and age given the quality there is in England squads so I’m really pleased for him.’
Before he made his mark with Guernsey FC Scott played for local club St Martin’s.
‘I laughed and shouted in happiness when I saw it, it’s unreal. He deserves everything he gets in life and football – what a lad,’ said St Martin’s director Ben Hunter.
‘For grassroots football and Guernsey football this is incredible, it shows kids they have the platform.’
Hunter said that even as a youth player it was clear Scott was a special talent.
‘You look at youngsters and can see they are very good, Alex was always very talented but it was when he got into his teenage years that you could see there was something special about him,’ he said.
The news of Scott’s call-up broke alongside an announcement from Guernsey FC saying that they would be receiving financial backing from Mr and Mrs Hands and Mr and Mrs Lansdown to ‘stabilise the club’s operations and continue delivering community impact while a wider fundraising base is built’.
‘Guy and I are proud to support Guernsey FC at this important moment,’ said Mrs Hands, who is also the chairwoman of the club. ‘Football has the power to bring people together and inspire future generations. This club plays a unique role in our island community and we want to help safeguard that. But we cannot do it alone – we hope our commitment encourages others to step forward.’
Mr Lansdown said: ‘We are pleased to stand alongside Guy and Julia in helping Guernsey FC plan with confidence. Sustained support from across the community will be key to unlocking the club’s ambitions and ensuring football continues to thrive in Guernsey.’
‘I think everyone knows how much it costs to sustain the club, and we are indebted to all of our sponsors,’ said Vance.
‘Travel is getting so expensive each year and we always need support, especially now with the women’s team and the development team as well.’
The funding is targeted at footballing and operational priorities, including supporting the first-team squad and player pathway, coaching and administrative resources, dedicated investment in the women’s team and dedicated investment in the development team.
‘This will ensure sustainability and progress. We now have the stadium which has helped with us being able to sustain the club, and as I said travel, but also ensuring there are players coming through the men’s and women’s teams and increasing opportunities for the players,’ said Vance.
‘It underpins the success of the men’s and women’s teams. The level of football is getting harder, we were relegated at the end of last season and coming back up is only possible with the help of funding.
‘Guernsey FC is here to stay and the Guernsey FC pathway is here to stay and we want to continue and find the next Alex Scotts and Maya Le Tissiers.’
As well as the new support pledge, Guernsey FC is still inviting further financial support.
