The sailors’ visit to the charity shop was part of the HMS Daring’s official visit to Guernsey for Remembrance Sunday. HMS Daring has held an official affiliation with the island since 2009 and is set to make a return, possibly as soon as next year, for the first time since 2016 after the ship has undergone extensive upgrades and a full refit.

While in Guernsey the crew took the opportunity to strengthen their links with Guernsey charities, including Les Bourgs Hospice. They spent some time on Friday checking and building Christmas trees as the shop prepared for Christmas.

‘It’s been good, it’s out of the ordinary doing this. It’s not the kind of thing we do on a normal day so it’s been good fun,’ said Leo Hirst, one of the visiting crew.

They were in the island until Sunday and said that it was good to get involved with Les Bourgs Hospice shop’s Christmas set-up, given that it is a local charity and HMS Daring’s links to the island.

Shop manager Danielle Bullock said that it had been good having the crew in to help at one of the shop’s busiest times.

‘They’ve been excellent – it’s amazing to have them here,’ she said.

‘We had a bit of a clear-out and sorted everything ready to put everything in their sections for Christmas.’
