Its newly launched Fund for Schools offers practical grants and expert guidance to help schools install or expand active-travel infrastructure and programmes, such as secure cycle parking, safer access routes, lockers, loan bikes and engagement campaigns that make it easier and safer for students to walk, scoot and cycle to school.
‘This fund helps schools turn good ideas into real, on-the-ground changes that make the school run cleaner, safer, and healthier for everyone,’ said Rollo de Sausmarez, director at the Better Journeys Project.
‘From improved bike parking to simple route improvements and awareness campaigns, small steps can have big daily impacts.’
The funding for the project is sponsored by Appleby Global and supported by the Tom Dorey Eco-Legacy, with a further £1,500 coming from the Health Improvement Commission.
‘We are thrilled to support the Fund for Schools initiative by the Better Journeys Project in Guernsey as it is a fantastic opportunity to help make active travel the easier choice for local families,’ said Health Improvement Commission active travel officer Amy Woollaston.
‘Our BeActive team aims to get more people, more active, more often and this initiative supports that by helping children build healthy habits from a young age. Walking, cycling and scooting to school not only boosts physical and mental wellbeing, but also sets the tone for a healthier, more active community.’
Applications are now open at www.betterjourneys.life/fundforschools until 10 January 2026. Schools will be notified of the outcome of their application by 1 February 2026.
