The island’s States is being asked to confirm the promotion from within of Elizabeth Maurice, pictured, who has been acting as chief executive while also holding down the job of treasurer.
The former incumbent, Theo Leijser, was dismissed by the States at the end of December last year but recently won an appeal to the Bailiwick Data Protection Commissioner to have details released of why he was fired.
But this month the States will be asked to approve the new appointment.
Mrs Maurice has been deputy chief executive since 2020, during which time she covered the chief’s responsibilities.
She was appointed temporary chief executive in March this year, a role she also held on a temporary basis in 2023 before Mr Leijser was appointed.
Policy & Finance Committee chairman Bill Abel said that because Mrs Maurice is still technically a Guernsey civil servant, her role would initially be made on a secondment basis. She would also resign as States treasurer.
The committee had on this occasion considered that external recruitment ‘was not appropriate’ because of the forthcoming Bailiwick Commission, he said, and given the amount of time this would take along with the time needed for familiarisation.
The States had also considered ‘head-hunting’ but decided to recommend Mrs Maurice.
‘Before looking outside, however, there was a clear consensus that an individual with the necessary experience and skills was already fulfilling the role and had efficiently done so for an extended period,’ Mr Abel said.
The Lt-Governor formally confirmed Mrs Maurice’s appointment on 1 December.
