Deputy Morel to front event on islands working together

Kirsten Morel, the Jersey politician at the centre of ‘ferry wars’ a year ago, is among the key speakers at an event on Channel Island cooperation being organised by the Jersey Chamber of Commerce next month.

Deputy Morel, the island’s Economic Development minister, was at odds with his then counterpart Deputy Neil Inder over the joint ferry tender process, and what appeared to be a near obsession in Jersey to appoint anyone but Condor Ferries.

Ultimately Jersey ran its own tender process after Guernsey selected Brittany Ferries and ended up awarding a 20-year contract with DFDS.

For many political watchers the saga seemed to capture exactly how and why Guernsey and Jersey seem to find it impossible to work together, but Deputy Morel will line up alongside CI Coop CEO Mark Cox, who runs a successful pan-island business, and Murray Norton, CEO of Jersey Chamber of Commerce, on the panel for the event in the Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier on Tuesday 10 February, to discuss the topic of ‘Is it time to lose the rivalry and work together?’

At the breakfast briefing in February a panel will discusses the challenges of working across Jersey and Guernsey in terms of logistics, transport links, the visitor economy strategy and day-to-day regulation.

Publicity material for the event said that businesses know that good working relationships between the islands go back many years, but challenges remain. ‘At times it seems like we’re working against each other,’ said Jersey Chamber.
