Police confirm ‘stay at home’ advice as Storm Goretti nears

Islanders are being urged to remain indoors from 6pm tonight with the latest forecast for Storm Goretti confirming ‘very serious’ conditions are expected.

Winds are being forecast to peak between 9pm and midnight, bringing gusts of up to force 12 and short periods of consistent force 11 from the west.

‘What we’re anticipating can only be described as very serious storm conditions,’ said Chief of Police Damian Kitchen, in an update issued following a meeting of authorities this morning.

‘What we’re asking is, for that short period this evening, for the public to stay indoors.

‘It is the best advice to keep you safe, and also very importantly, to make sure that the emergency services are kept free to deal with any demand that comes through that period,’ he said.

All events and bookings taking place at States of Guernsey premises, including schools, this evening are being cancelled.

The Guernsey Sporting Achievement Awards, which were due to take place at Beau Sejour, have been pushed back 24 hours to Friday evening.

Several large retailers have also confirmed that they intend to close early at 6pm, with conditions expected to deteriorate from 6pm.

Businesses are being asked to take any possible steps that could help reduce the number of people travelling in the early evening.
