Inaugural Travel Showcase broadens holiday horizons

Dreams of sunny beaches and foreign adventures brought islanders out in the wind and rain to the Guernsey Ports’ inaugural travel show this weekend.

Based upstairs at the airport, the Travel Showcase featured 25 exhibitors offering information on everything from planes and ferries to trips to nearby Sark or exotic river cruises.

Despite a post-Storm Goretti weather hangover, more than 500 people had passed through the airport show by 3pm on Sunday.

As well as the obvious candidates such as Aurigny and Brittany Ferries, there were representatives from lesser-known Channel Islands companies.

Emma Le Sauvage was there representing Uniworld, the Guernsey-based company which arranges river cruises across Europe, South America and Egypt.

‘We have been running for 50 years and based in Guernsey for the last 12,’ she said. ‘It gets our name out there as a lot of people don’t know we are Guernsey-based. We’ve had a lot of interest and have a lot of people take a brochure and sign up for our champagne draw.’

She added that she was impressed with the number of people who visited, especially given the weather.

‘Ports did a great job advertising it and were encouraging everyone to share it on social media.’

Among the islanders browsing the stalls were Lyndsey Nicholls and Peter Welch.

‘We are looking for some inspiration for 2027,’ he said. ‘We’ve spoken to an independent travel adviser and Dubai looks an option. We heard about this on social media and it’s definitely been worth coming as it’s given us some new ideas.’

Hayley McInnes was also looking to find early travel options.

‘I saw it on social media, and wanted to get an idea of what was available,’ she said. ‘It can be expensive to holiday from Guernsey and there are some options here to travel direct and not have to go through the UK.’
