The land, which amounts to just over 1.5 acres, is located around the corner from Bordeaux Harbour, and listed on the local market for £1.15m.

As it stands, there is no planning permission for any development.

Owner Dave Hubert said the land had belonged to his family for generations, but the time has come to sell.

‘It’s just too much to look after,’ he said.

‘It’s sad, but you can’t hang on to everything forever.

‘It would make an ideal building plot on the western side – there’s a lot of potential here, being in an industrial area.

‘The States have looked at it lots of times, to fill it up with non-noxious waste, which I’m not against.’

As well as an old greenhouse and small field, the site consists of a historic granite quarry, which was dug by Mr Hubert’s great-grandfather, who leased it to a Cornish company for granite extraction. Now it lies dormant, but Mr Hubert said that he believed the fresh water contained within it harboured many wartime secrets.

‘I’ve been thinking of going magnet fishing,’ he said.

‘During the occupation, they had to hand in all shotguns to the Germans. Rather than do that, someone went around collecting all the shotguns and my father told me there’s at least four sackfuls of shotguns that were thrown in here, rather than handed in.

‘Then one night, my father and his friends pinched a load of steel cable from the Germans, and put it across the quarry with a pulley on it. They’d use it as a zip wire and it became known as the Vale swimming pool, because they couldn’t swim in the sea – the beaches were closed.’

The quarry is listed with Cranfords Estate Agents.
