Deputies Lindsay de Sausmarez and Gavin St Pier will field questions from islanders on any area of the committee’s mandate, although it is anticipated that the majority will be about tax reform.
People can send in questions in advance or ask them in the comments section of the live-streamed event and are being asked to ‘like’ questions they want to be asked to help prioritise what gets answered.
Deputy de Sausmarez said that the committee had paid close attention to the online feedback received since it published the tax reform policy letter setting out the package approved by the last States.
‘While it’s worth stressing that we are not proposing that tax package – we’re simply under direction to continue to define it while we’re exploring alternatives to it – we do want to make sure that the proposals agreed by the previous Assembly can be better understood,’ she said.
It was clear, she said, that many people had ‘very legitimate questions’ and this live-stream had been arranged to answer them in a way that was accessible and interactive.
Deputy St Pier said it was understandable that the focus of attention was still on the possible introduction of a goods and services tax.
‘But that’s just one part of a much wider package of measures designed to protect low- and middle-income earners, which too often gets lost in discussion.
‘This isn’t an exercise in trying to “sell” the tax package to people, as it’s not at this stage even a recommendation from our committee, but rather seeking to answer direct questions and concerns people have about it to help inform discussion.’
The live video Facebook Q&A will take place on Thursday 29 January from 7pm-8pm. The full recording will be published on www.gov.gg/taxpackage after it has finished. More information about the package of tax measures is also available on that page.
