‘At this stage, we have received no indication that any Bailiwick patients currently receiving care at Southampton have been affected,’ said Dermot Mullin, director of operations for Health & Social Care.
‘We are monitoring the situation closely and remain in contact with our NHS partners as they coordinate their response. Our thoughts are with the patients and staff as they work to manage the situation safely.’
The off-island travel team is working to put alternative arrangements in place for people due to travel to Southampton for planned care tomorrow.
‘Unfortunately, appointments requiring an overnight bed tomorrow have been cancelled. We are awaiting confirmation whether others will proceed virtually. All affected patients will be contacted directly,’ said Mr Mullin, who also asked anyone with concerns about upcoming travel for treatment to contact travel@gov.gg.
‘While Southampton manages its major incident, we are working with NHS partners at other hospitals to activate contingency plans and ensure safe, timely access to treatment for any emergency medevac cases.’
A major incident was declared at the hospital following a fire, which broke out in the endoscopy unit, in its west wing, at 5.30am.
It said that no-one had been injured and patients in all affected areas had been evacuated to safe areas of the site.
Visitors were being asked to stay away and all planned outpatient appointments today were cancelled.
The hospital’s emergency department was diverting patients away unless their condition was life or limb-threatening.
Chief medical officer Paul Grundy said about 200 patients had been evacuated.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said more than 110 firefighters attended the blaze at its peak.
They have not yet identified the cause of the blaze.
Patients were moved to safe areas, including inside the main entrance of the hospital.
